Witchcraft and spirituality doesn’t always have to be expensive! Continue reading below to see the top 5 underrated magical tools you should incorporate into your practice today!
Pendulum
Pendulums are one of the most underrated magical divination tools there is. The beauty of a pendulum is they don’t just have to be that stereotypical cone-like shape on a chain. You can make a pendulum out of any object (really!) and a thread.
I won’t always have mine on me, so I’ll often use my silver charm necklace as a makeshift pendulum.
You can make a makeshift pendulum too! Just take a thread or even a piece of hair if it’s long enough and a ring or charm. Thread it through and there you have it – your first impromptu pendulum!
Birthday candles
When it comes to accessibility, nothing can beat a birthday candle for a quick, low-cost candle spell. What’s also great about these is they’re incredibly portable and you can get them at any grocery store ever!
They also burn down in 15 minutes or under, so they're great if you're impatient like me or just need something quick. I’ve also found that the more passion and energy you have behind a spell, the quicker they burn!
Kitchen spices
I’d be willing to bet that you have at least salt and black pepper in your kitchen cabinet. That may seem like nothing to you, you can do a lot with even that little.
Salt is excellent for both purification and protection. Multiple different cultures have references to using salt in their magical practices. Italians for instance will sweep with salt to ward of “malacchio,” their version of the evil eye.
Black pepper has historically been used in many different cultures to exorcize negative energies from your home or ward off evil.
I use both of these spices to protect my home, and they’ve been nothing but helpful!
Rocks
Many witches love a good crystal, but sometimes you don’t have one on you or you don’t have the budget for it…and that's ok!
If you need some quick protection or magical assistance, consider using your pendulum (handmade or purchased!) and running it over a rock pile, asking if any of the stones would be willing to help you. If you get a wild swing “yes,” they’re likely more than willing to help you!
“Weeds”
Not everyone has access to a shop where they can buy fancy herbs or even the funds to buy it. Your local “weeds” are likely more than willing to help you fill this spiritual gap!
Even something as simple as grass (which has abundance properties) can be worked with. Get to know your local “weeds” by talking to them while you take a walk and identifying them online.
Bonus: Bible and Non-canonical materials
Not all of you will be comfortable or even want to use the Bible in your spell work, but it is a mighty tool that is frequently forgotten in spiritual spaces.
Psalms has scriptures that can be used for anything from blessing to cursing a family line. Hoodoo (a closed practice coming from African-American enslaved peoples) utilized the Bible historically for some of these purposes and more, and it still does today!
If you do go down this route, I would recommend that you do research beforehand. This will help ensure you do not accidentally culturally appropriate or use a verse differently than how it may have been used historically – we want to avoid backfires if we can!
Additionally, there are many non-canonical books that have strong potential for many different spiritual rituals. You can view many of these for free here.

Thank you so much for your comment and advice! I love them for not only their speed but size too — I love tiny things! And hard agree with the incense, I’ve done similar workings to what you’ve described and they’ve worked really well!
Excellent list! I have been using birthday sized candles for years. My favorite reason is the candle burns almost completely in a very short time making spell work quick and easy. Obviously one does not want all spells worked this way, but most don’t need more than this. More power? More candles! Usually no more than five, three being average. I probably would go to a larger candle if I thought a spell needed more than seven.
Additional tip: incense sticks can be used the same way as candles for spells. I have done some lovely cleansing spells with a combination of candles and incense. The short sticks without wood centers are optimal, but any incense will work.
