As a beginner spiritualist, you’ll oftentimes find yourself “putting the cart before the horse” in spellwork so to speak – you get ahead of yourself! This will happen to all of us one time or another, so don’t put yourself down over it.
That being said, if this is happening to you often, read on for 8 important tips you should keep in mind to up your spellwork game!
Be specific with the results you want.
When you prepare to perform a spell, you want to take the time beforehand to know what you really want.
That can mean meditation (if you’re into that!), talking aloud, or having a discussion with a close friend. Whatever gets you to form that crystal-clear picture for you is right.
Once you got it, write it down! Your finished spell is like a fully constructed chain, and the steps to get there are links. Think about what the links need to accomplish together and separately for the whole chain (your completed spell!) to come out flawlessly!
Start small.
If you’re just starting spellwork, you might be tempted to perform a massive and highly structured ritual. This might not be advisable because such a thing is challenging even for a seasoned practitioner.
I say this because you can frustrate yourself easily in the beginning if none of your spells work. Doubt starts to creep in, and you throw away your whole practice, thinking yourself to be foolish!
I don’t want that to happen to you!
Starting small with a simpler request or a simpler ritual, like good luck getting sweet treats and such (which I did!) and succeeding at that can encourage you in the early parts of your craft. Later you can try more complicated spellcasting!
Make your correspondences match.
You’d be surprised how often I see practitioners utilize ingredients that make no sense together.
Blindly throwing a half dozen darts in your apothecary, tossing the results in a jar, adding glitter, and calling it a day does not a spell make.
Carefully choose the ingredients that go into your prospective spells. Consider how the ingredients will play with each other and if they’ll get along.
Do your research!
You might not have access to witchcraft books with metaphysical correspondences, but if you’re reading this blog I have to assume you have the internet…so use it!
While I’d caution you to take the first thing you read on the internet as fact, it’s a pretty sure bet that if multiple different sources confirm it, it’s likely accurate.
You can start with a “x metaphysical correspondences” google, but if you want something more specific, Witchipedia tends to have most herbal correspondences and Wikipedia is a good catch-all for historical uses if you really search for it.
Ask for help (from spirits)!
Spirit work isn’t something to take up lightly, but I will say it is one good way to up your spellwork game – if you find a spirit that is willing to work with you.
General suggestions I have if you’re just starting out is to remain respectful and open, spend at least a little bit of time getting to know that spirit, and consider explaining why you want the result you want.
Spirits are a lot like people (especially if they were people once!). They’ll have different personalities, different wants, different likes and dislikes. Just be conscious of that when you begin, do research where you can, and you should be fine.
Contrary to what some Christians might have you believe, the majority of spirits aren’t out to get you!
Give those spirits offerings!
You know what I said earlier, about spirits being a lot like people? Well, people often want payment for work, and it’s much the same with spiritual work.
Sometimes you can get away with something as simple as a glass of water with the right spirit and a small ask, but other times you might need something more.
The only way to know what that spirit wants is to ask and then receive the answer. Pay attention to any “gut feelings” or intuitive thoughts you have. You can confirm with them through a pendulum or some other method of your choice.
Use your intuition.
This goes for both consorting with spirits and writing your spells! You know a lot more than you think you do.
Don’t be cocky, but do learn to trust yourself. That is one of the most important lessons to learn in witchcraft.
Stop focusing on aesthetics.
Oftentimes as practitioners, we’ll see the flawless rituals on Pinterest, those perfectly decorated and dusted altars. Soon we start to feel bad about our own practice.
It’s important to remind yourself that perfection isn’t the point of ritual or spellcrafting at all – it’s efficacy, and ultimately that’s what we’re working towards!
