Before you can really begin to decode and understand how color can be used in your own magical practice, we first need to define what color magic even is.
What is color magic?
Color magic is, simply put, the process of utilizing color and its correspondences (or meanings) in a magical setting. This can be as simple as lighting a red candle on a date night to spark romance or more elaborate like painting your bedroom and selecting decor of varying shades of blue to invoke calm.
All colors can mean different things to different cultures or people. What I am about to share is a more generalized list of correspondences. Read on to get inspiration on how you can use color in your practice!
Red
Red is often associated with romantic love and passion. If you want to strengthen your love and dedication to a partner, this is your color!
Orange
Orange is associated with creativity and energy. Think about a flame: it’s orange, and it transforms that energy into something powerful! Use this color any time you want to spark a change or start something new.
Yellow
Yellow is associated with joy. It is a very bright, happy color. The sun casts a soft yellow light onto the earth and banishes the dark. So it is the same with yellow! If you are in a dark place and need a pick-me-up, this is an excellent color to turn to.
Green
Green is the color of growth, fertility, and opportunity. Think about plant growth; it is all green! Grass and “weeds” are all plentiful and incredibly difficult to get rid of or slow. For this reason, you can also use green to represent persistence.
Blue
Blue is the color of healing and emotions. It is also a soothing color, so using it in spells that are related to relaxation is good. I’ve found that using a blue 7-day candle for an ongoing emotional protection ward works incredibly well for me!
Purple
Purple is the color of royalty and spirituality. If you want to focus on increasing your spiritual connectedness, this is the color you want!
Pink
Pink is generally used for love, and more specifically, non-romantic love. Self-love is a lovely manifestation for this color. Rose quartz, also a light pink, is amazing for self-love too and these can be used together as a part of a ritual to help you learn to accept and love yourself for who you are.
Black
Black can be used for protection, banishment, and more baneful spellwork. If you want an entity or energy to leave or you need to protect yourself, this is a color you can utilize to increase your spell’s efficacy.
White
White is generally used in purification or cleansing spells or workings. It is also a universal and adaptable color that can be used in any spell, so long as you focus your intent.
Brown
Brown is an excellent grounding color. If you feel like you need to connect with your body, this is a color you should consider using more.
That’s it for this beginner's guide! I hope this was useful, and remember, color magic can be as fluid as your own magical practice. If you feel like you should use a different color in a spell than this list suggests, use it, no permission needed!
